There's an affectionate obituary of Zawinul on Bloomberg - http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... refer=muse - by Mike Zwerin, the veteran jazz critic. in which he recalls, among other things, that Joe claimed to have Sinti blood, along with Hungarian and Czech.

If you haven't heard the man's music lately, listen to Brown Street, the double CD he issued this year. It revisits tunes from the Weather Report and Miles Davis days, recorded live in his Vienna club with his current rythym section and a German big band. It'll blow your head off.

Yes sad news-he was just about the only guy to get a personal sound from a synth.
and poor old Koono-who will he copy now?

There was an excellent BBC4 documentary last night which I hope will be repeated at some time. Not sure when it was made but Joe was over 70 in the interviews so it gave the feel of a "career retrospective" - perhaps made after his illness was known. It also reflected Joe's early development on accordian - who knows, maybe he could have gone down a more trad route if there had been any career opportunities back then.
