As much as I love my mandolins and all-things mandolin-related, I have to agree that was fairly horrific. Just the kind of gratuitous tremelo that gives us mando-lovers a bad name. Or lots of bad names.

I ran into a guy last winter who was a member of a 30+ member mandolin orchestra. I gather they are popular. He told me there were dozens in the US and he was hosting concerts of similar European mandolin orchestras in New England this summer. His group in turn tours Europe next summer. He says everything is written out in standard notation and everyone reads. I would have never guessed.

I'd heard mandolin orchestras were gaining popularity again. They were hugely popular in the US at the start of the twentieth century. I've heard of a couple over here in Blighty but managed to avoid them.

When I posted earlier about loving all things mandolin-related, I'd forgotten about mandolin orchestras.

Ugh.

Zoot deserting gypsy jazz for a normal, grown up person's life and mandolin orchestras gaining in popularity! The world is falling apart around me. Soon, I will have only my Kylie posters to cling to for stability.
