Possible regular Sheffield GJ session?

Postby hullcityfc2002 » Fri Jun 11, 2010 8:44 am

Hi, I was think of maybe setting up a regular Gypsy Jazz jam session, say once a month in Sheffield perhaps at a local pub (any suggestions?).

I have never done anything like this before.

Can anyone give me any ideas of what would make a good session, what is the best format/type of venue to choose?

Is there any interest from any of you out there to join us or help set this up?

I have interest from a local GJ guitar teacher / event organiser who is willing to ask any visiting GJ artists to the area to do the occasional workshop as well if they are willing....

Any advice / help would be appreciated :-)

Thanks,

Phil

Hi ! Good on you, spread the disease ! I would suggest considering a 'core' duo/trio, scam some money from the landlord to go towards your efforts, them bitches always like free music, don't give in to their 'have a couple of pints and a few ham-paste sandwiches' bullshit. Then you can invite bods to sit in. It's a starting point , good luck.

Good luck with that, I set up a similar thing in Glasgow. People told me I was mad and that it would bever work.

Well....two years on we meet every week, sometimes we have as many as 16 players, we've been featured in a local news item on the BBC, a few of us supported John Jorgenson on his last Glasgow gig and we've been asked to form a group specifically to play during Sunday brunch at a local upmarket hotel.

It needed a lot of work to promote the thing at the start but it was well worth it and despite the initial doubts expressed by some not only did we find enough people to keep the thing going we had to increase the frequency from monthly to weekly and we have new people appearing almost monthly.

I've pm'ed you with my number if you want to have a chat

Cheers... any ideas on a good format?

I was thinking of maybe 10 core songs to start with, you know the usual suspects.... handing round some chord charts and just getting people to jam along?

Are these things usually any more structured than that?

Hi there, that's basically it but there are somethings to think about to help the thing run/develop smoothly.

I'll write up some notes and email them along with some resources - grilles. heads etc.

Hi everyone in the Sheffield region.

I have made progress in getting together a djam session!!

I have booked the small room of Bath pub in Sheffield (centralish) for the second Wednesday in the month (8 to 10 pm) starting from 11 August, then 8 September and provisionally booked it for every second Wed of the month should it take off...?

Here are the venue address details:

Bath 66-68 Victoria Street, Sheffield S3 7QL
Tel: 0114 249 5151‎

They also do great beer!!

If you want to come along let me know or just turn up :-)

Any experience / skill level will be OK, it is only for fun :-)

BTW I will be at Samois Petit Barbeau site (cream Talbot motor home) if anyone wants to talk to me about it.

Cheers,

Phil

Just a quick update. The last Sheffield jam event as so popular, some people couldn't get in! So we have now moved to the large room at the Bath pub.

The Sheffield Gypsy jam sessions are still once a month on the second Wednesday of the month.

The next one is on the 8th September 8:00 in the Bath pub, Sheffield.

Hopefully see you there?

Cheers.
