Joseph Reinhardt
Here is an extract of Joseph Reinhardt playing "Odette". It sounds to me as if he is playing an amplified guitar. Do you agree?

Yes I am sure it is amplified and the amazing thing is that this track was apparently recorded in April, 1944. If this date is correct that is actually before the Americans entered Paris which I think was August 1944. I had assumed American soldiers brought guitar amplification to Paris but it seems Joseph managed to get hold of some basic device even before they arrived. We now know for certain that Django played electric guitar BEFORE he went to the USA, the Epiphone footage being from mid-1946, but Joseph was apparently experimenting with amplification some two years previously.
It has always been claimed that Joseph performed on amplified guitar before Django but I am surprised it was a early as April, 1944. I probably need to check that recording date to be sure.
Below Joseph has what looks like a Stimer on his guitar mid-1946 before Django went to America.
