Some of these photos are so damn huge they don't even fit on the page, so they're cropped. Sorry about that.

Amazing collection.

It must have taken a lot of work to put these together and to post them on here, many thanks for sharing.

The second photo down is incredibly rare. I have never seen it before. A great find!

I do not think that is Gusti Malha in the first photo. It does not look anything like him. I think Anne Legrand has made an incorrect identification. Charles Delaunay stated that the photo was taken in 1931. Legrand says Django went to Toulon in 1930 and Dregni days 1931. I have not as yet been able to ascertain for certain who is correct.

That is not Philippe Brun on sax in the third photo. He played trumpet.

Pic 4 is 1945 at a concert for the US Forces.

The one of Django playing the violin standing up has Gus Viseur on guitar and Alix Combelle at the piano from 1942.

The signed first photo of the Quintette with Bert Marshall was taken at Claridges Hotel, Paris in 1934.

You are right, Django is eating not playing dice.

The Le Bourget photos are variously claimed to be from late 1949 or early 1950.

The lady in the last photo is Joyce Ferrario, the wife of Django's chaffeur at the time (1947/48).

Thank you for all the info, Teddy! You're loved more than you might think. Trust me.

Says "Circa 1940". Perhaps earlier? Really now. Whose guitar is it?

Thanks for the links.

Yes obviously earlier than 1940 as Grappelli was in England then. Probably before 1939 also.I rather doubt it was Django's guitar as he often could not be bothered to take one to a gig let alone to some presumably informal gathering like this. If it is Django's guitar, we must be talking 1938 at the latest.

A pity the people who own rare photos like this seldom have any valid information about them. A friend has suggested it might be taken at Jacotte Perrier's apartment in Montmartre where Django and Stephane would come to jam with her father before the war.

The photo taken of them in a club sitting by customers with champagne on the table was taken at in the summer of 1937 at Big Apple - Chez Bricktop and the guy sitting behind Joseph is definitely Gusti Malha.

Thank you so much! Django is my passion, as odd as that might sound in the wrong context. You were saving that image for your book. Great image of Stéphane's arm.

The Book - Will it ever happen? :(

Also, an extremely rare unedited image of Django Reinhardt and our favorite doc in Aquarium, New York on October the 30:th. The other oft-seen image with David Rose was obviously photoshopped.

Ah, of course Gus Viseur, the famous guitarist!!! Playing with Django, the famous violinist!! ... So by that rationale,Alix Combelle, must be a fiddle player by trade, and a pianist when there's a camera on him!

.........And these are the instruments The New Quintet personnel actually played. So ignore all that nonsense in the discographies:-

Here is a rarely seen photo where I think Django looks particularly silly. It was taken on 1st December, 1937 but I feel it has been doctored in some way. I have another photo taken at the same time and the backgrounds do not match at all.

Looks doctored indeed. You were saving that for your book :') Thanks for sharing.

Looks to be Django's famous shopping attire.

November 7 or 8, 1937. Netherlands. From left to right - Charles Delaunay? Unknown man, Django's wife Naguine, Stéphane Grappelli, Ed Crommelin, Joseph Reinhardt, Eugène Vées?

1937-11-07-DjangoShoppingTrip Naguine Ed Crommelin 3rd from right. nov 7 or 8.jpg

and on the 8th of November. Apparently in the Scheveningen district of Haag in the Netherlands.

...And Teddy's previous "preview" of his book. A very generous size crop. On a side note, what's with all the poor scans, crops and doctorings of images of D. Reinhardt?
