Rare Django Photos

Three years after his Charlie Chaplin impression, Django and the new quintet took two photos at Studio Harcourt with Josette Daydé. One of them was supposedly never issued. But it was. Josette looks kinda funny, so i'm not surprised it's not seen more often.

Here's Django with the beautiful smiling Josette and Daidy Davis-Boyer, The Hot Club and Charles Delaunay's secretary. She's around age 90, probably still alive. Someone should milk her of information before she passes on. Roger, are you up to the task? Django's smile and pose is silly and he looks real proud of himself. The humour that man had.



Mike Horowitz over at Djangobooks got this sweet photo for the cover of his book. I've never seen this one before. is it 1949? Nice closeup of Django's Stimer.

I'm certain Django might have stolen things in his youth, but as he grew older and became wealthy, he rather wanted to spend as much as possible. A rich gypsy was surely something of great status. One day after a gig in "Le bœuf sur le toit", Django had gambled and lost a big heap of money. Somewhat disappointed, he saw his guitar lying on the stage and went and picked it up, brought his pick out, and started improvising on a tune which would later be called "Nuages". In the years to come, he earned many magnitudes more money than he had lost that night. Money didn't matter much to Reinhardt, getting rid of it mattered a whole lot more. It was enjoyable.

Django bought more than a few cars during his life. Not to get somewhere, but just to drive them for pleasure. Crashing them all over the country, Django never owned a driver's license and was forced to hire drivers to avoid crashing his cars and suffer public humiliation.

On the contrary of his father's illegal driving activities,
Django's second son, Babik, was a man of the law.

Though loved by his father, when Babik pursued and eventually made true his dreams of becoming a Sheriff, Babik was forced to arrest his father with reasons including mild adultery, reckless driving and without a license, snatching a hen, breaking its neck, and taking it home for supper under his arm, (true story) appearing on illegal recordings, and more. Regrettably, Django was shot in the head in 1953 by Babik and suffered a major brain hemorrhage, and death.

An unfortunate death for our favourite guitarist.
