Who Cares?

Post by Teddy Dupont »

Just for Mobreau here is an absolutely fascinating photo. It was taken in 1960 and shows Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington holding their Fats Waller awards for 1959 and 1960 respectively and - wait for it - the French pianist Rene Urtreger holding his 1960 Django Reinhardt prize.

Other winners of the Django Reinhardt prize include Richard Galliano and Michel Petrucciani. Who says this forum is not cutting edge?

 I do feel a bit of a cretin. To be honest Mr Dupont, I would be one of the first people sending a cheque for a copy of your book, should it be published. That is if I am still eligible!

Of course. And here, especially for you, is a rarely seen photo of Django doing his Charlie Chaplin impression:-

Thats a lot of names that aren't immediatly associated with gypsy jazz.. ( i.e. I haven't heard of most of em! ) What then are the criteria for winning this prize and whats it all about?

The photo caption says 10th December, 1960 but it also says Urtreger's award was for 1960. As it was December, perhaps they couldn't decide what year it applied to. :? Jazz musicians and photographers are not noted for their mathematical expertise.

It is for the oustanding jazz musician of the year presumably in France.

For those of you spellbound by this thread, René Urtréger made a recording in the 60s with Henri Crolla and Stéphane Grappelli called "Notre Ami Django". Other participants included André Ekyan, Hubert Rostaing and Maurice Vander.
